Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (80 GB)

Customer Reviews

Better than an iPod!

You can't beat this Archos 605, 80gb wifi product - it's the best and better than the iPods (or other similar products) that holds movies. It's compact, easy to convert and load movies, and best of all, the resolution is crystal clear. However, I did not give it a five only because there were many additional downloads required to make it operate even better. Preference would have been for company to charge more for the actual Archos player and just include all these needed programs. Hated the extra time and effort in downloading these additional apps. Regarding the case, make sure to get one BUT don't bother with the ones made by Archos - too flimsy. Just go directly for one made by Noreve. Worth every penny. Trust me, I am a big case person and will search high and low to find the perfect one.

Close, but no cigar, save your money

Had problems with this product...and yes, the customer service was ATROCIOUS!!! First one I got, charged all night, booted up the next morning, and was not fully charged...1st call to customer service, was told I needed to charge for 24 hours or could destroy flash memory (WHAT???) second call was told only needed to charge it for 7-8 hours...they told me to send it back with no explanation as to what could be the cause of the battery prob??? Kept it for a week while waiting for my replacement, randomly re-booted for no reason, wiped out my music folder and had to re-sync everytime (20 minute job, battery drainer). Got my new unit, same exact thing with the re-sync, system re-booted, my music library empty, 20-minute re-sync. Called customer service and they had no clue(either lying or oblivious) since it happened to both units during normal operation. Find it very hard to believe no one else had this problem (ZUNE, IPOD SANDISK, whatever would have had an explanation for this) This product would be great if it worked properly and if there were issues, customer service could remedy the problem. Unfortunately they cannot do so; am planning on buying another zune or ipod with less functionality, but better durability and customer service. If you do buy one of these, monitor it for a week and return it asap if you have problems because $300 is alot of bread to drop on something that doesn't work properly.

Great viewing screen but a pain having to purchase all the widgets to get everything to function.

Great viewing but there seems to be a problem with battery life while watching movies. I purchased two of them that had that same problem. Having to purchase all the widgets for the device is a bit of a pain and costly! I compared archos versus zune and zune was cheaper and easier to get movies downloaded to the device. The battery life on zune held up to its specs....

Nice PVP

I bought this PVP as I needed something to watch movies on in the plane where I can't open my laptop (I am 6'7"). The picture is perfect. I downloaded the Opera browers for the extra cash. It is a little annoying that I have to pay for extra, but really the cost of the 605 base model is very good, so I can send a little more on some of the extras. The WIFI is a little slow, and hooking up to a secured network is a little time consuming, but not that big of a deal. All in all, if you are looking for the best PVP on the market, this is your product. My brother has an ITouch, and this is so much better.

Poor battery life and crappy OS kill an otherwise good device

Battery life is an awful 3 hours making it worthless as a video player. OS is buggy. Otherwise its a good device.

Archos DVR Station Gen 5 for 405, 605, and 705

Customer Reviews

Great minus the program guide

I mainly bought this for the remote control. It makes an expensive remote control but there are no other options out there (that I could find). So far I've owned it for about 3 weeks and performs as advertised, except for the program guide. Only certain countries can use the program guide. There is a list somewhere on the Archos website. Not a big deal breaker - just means I have to use the program function just like a vcr. Recordings are good quality and the bitrate can be varied to save space on your archos. I have an 80Gb 605 so there are no worries about space. The remote works great and the unit charges your Archos while it's docked. You can also use the unit as a usb interface between your computer, or an external hard drive or thumb drive. It has ports for both USB and Mini USB. One good use for the dvr is to play videos that the Archos can't play. Eg some H264 videos won't play, and HD video has a resolution that is too high for it. The DVR can be used to record these files (in real time) through the video card on a computer (provided it has a TV out). For some reason the quality of HD (high defintion) video suffers when recorded to the Archos, even on the highest bitrate. This may something to do with downsizing the image from 1080 or 1280 to 640 pixels. I'm still experimenting with this. All up the device does what it's supposed to do, except for the program guide, which can only be used in certain countries.

This pruduct could be improved upon

This a good little unit and is a must for watching your Archos on the TV. It needs to have the latest inputs though (HDMI,DVI,etc.). It charges the Archos pretty quickly so that's good. It's a little pricey for what you get but overall it is a good product.

Worth much more than the 'Travel DVR'

I needed to copy content from my cable DVR box to the Archos for viewing on business trips. The 'Travel DVR adapter' would have done the job, but for $25 more, you get the full DVR docking station. This provides a nice, stable place to leave the A605 while it's charging, you get AV output connections as well as input, AND you get the QWERTY remote control. Buy the travel DVR and you're paying nearly $60 for nothing more than a socket that does input only. I'm now $500 into this system, what with the browser, codecs and input adapters. It's kind of clunky looking - very square and a weird, slope-like design. I found the 'DVR adapter' in the original A605 box - luckily the misses hadn't thrown it away. This is a piece of silver plastic that you have to clip onto the top of the DVR station to enable your particular type of Gen5 Archos to sit on top. It's quite tricky to dock the A605 without straining the connectors - you have to insert it into a channel between 2 pieces of plastic with about a +/- 2° tolerance. if you get it right, it drops straight in. I haven't even bothered trying the DVR functionality yet, since I already have a cable DVR box. All I do is set the cable DVR playing and make the Archos do a manually started but timed finish record from its A/V inputs. Incidentally, according to Archos tech support the Travel DVR can do the timed manual recording that I wanted; it just doesn't enable the DVR scheduler. This isn't mentioned at all in the ridiculously sparse user documentation. Once the A605 is docked, it enables the 'Recorder' menu icon. The choice of encoding options is rather limited, with only AVI files with compressed WAV audio possible. I leave the aspect ratio settings on 'Auto' and it seems to figure out what size the input video signal is. Video bitrate choices are 500, 1000 or 1500kbps. Audio is either 32k or 48k. On the highest quality setting, files aren't that small - about 700MB for a 30 min TV show. I can get a whole DVD movie into that space using Handbrake. I will do some experimenting with settings and post results... I have tried using the video editing features built into the A605 firmware. This enables you to remove sections from media - e.g. commercials from a TV program. You have to manually scroll through the video file and set a start/end point for each section you want to cut out. You can only set one pair of start/end points at a time. When viewing the edited content, I notice that it always fails to cut the last 0.5s or so of video - even though I placed the marks accurately. At that point you can choose whether to save your edited file to a new file, which takes AGES since it's reading and writing several GB from/to the same HDD - lots of head movement.

archos dvr station

still have not figured how it works after 4 months. i even bought the extra plug ins for 50 bucks

Good docking station, TERRIBLE DVR

The GOOD: If you want to dock your Archos to your TV or you Entertainment Sytem to listen to music, watch video, or browse the web, this is cool The remote is a much better interface for web browsing than the archos itself. The BAD: If you want a DVR, forget it. 1. The DVR station does not have a tuner. This means that you have to make sure that your TV (cable box, etc) is on the right channel and you cannot watch anything else at the same time. 2. Only unprotected recorded video can be watched on your TV. If the original video stream is pretected (like most DVDs), you can only watch the recorded video on the Archos screen, NOT on the TV screen. You also can't watch your protected recorded video anywhere else like your PC. Some folks claim that some cable/dish providers protect ALL their content. That would mean that you could only record with your VHF antenna, until that's obsolete next year. SUMMARY: I think it's a good product that may be worth $85 as an entertainment docking station with remote for your Archos. It's a horrible DVR.

Rio Carbon 5 GB MP3 Player

Customer Reviews

Rio Carbon MP3 5GB Player

I have enjoyed this product for years, downloading books and listening to them while I relax, clean the house, work in the yard, etc. I bought my own earphones because earbuds never stay in my ears. The Rio device works beautifully. It downloads easily and the sound is clear. It bookmarks which is extremely helpful because once in a while I have leaned against something with the Rio in my pocket and suddenly I find my self at the beginning of the book again. No problem; the bookmark feature takes me back to my spot. The battery cannot be replaced. The first one lasted about 4 years and is now fading, losing power even when not in use, so I recently bought the same model again.

Take your chances.....

Well, the carbon is good in ease to use as well as pretty good battery life. Be warned though, the little volume wheel is very cheaply inserted in the player and if you drop it, or even press hard on it, it will cave in into the play itself, and then you can ajust volume or navigate the menus fast. When i had mine, it did this exact thing 2 times, and after spending 100 bucks to get it repaired, it breaks again, and i decided to buy an ipod and have never been happier. My advice, skip this and buy a 4 or 8 gig nano, or a Creative zen.

Rio Carbon Player

My MP3 player arrived in a defective condition. It doesn't work correctly and I would like to return it.

Second Puchase

I had a Rio Carbon and liked it very much but I dropped it and the volume control got stuck. It still worked for quite awhile but recently it locked up when turning on and off. I ordered another one to replace it after reviewing the other models available. The unit has a rechargable battery and it cannot be opened but it lasts long enough for me to get in several hour or two workouts before recharging. The package arrived in about a week and it was wrapped very well for shipping.

Very pleased with Rio Carbon

The Rio Carbon was actually a gift for my husband. He loves it. It is very user friendly. Unlike the Ipod that everyone else in the house owns and he is very happy.

Zune 8 GB Digital Media Player Black (2nd Generation)

Customer Reviews

Sweet!!!

I was given an ipod nano for my birthday and found a lot of distortion on bass heavy music and the only way to stop it was turn off the EQ doing this made the music sound nerve grading and trebley I went online and found other reviews saying the same thing. My son recently got a zune and I asked him if I could test out the same songs on his zune, well the bass was clear as day with no distortion the next day I got a green one and love it, the only drawback is if I remove music from my computer to save space the zune software will remove the same music from my zune when re-synced but that's o.k. because it sounds so good. if you like hip hop, R and B or drum and bass or even tribal drumming you will be happier with the zune.

the ZUNE

Very nice product. Once you down load the software from Microsoft and get that sqaured away the ZUNE is very nice. Very easy to rip CD's and burn to the player. I haven't tried to down load an audio book as yet. I have looked at some websites and no one has the ZUNE listed as a player they support. This could be a problem but haven't really checked it out.

Tiny Powerhouse

Got this after I sold my first gen Zune which I would rarely use. The screen was the first suprise- crisp and high detail. I also love the scratch-proof metal back, and the tiny pocketable size. I use it every day in the car to listen to music as well as podcasts (another great feature from the 2nd gen!) and the quality is great. Battery life is also really good. The only thing I don't love is the Zune desktop- although I hope they can make it more feature-rich in later versions. Definitely one of my better purchases.

drawbacks of zune

# USB cable has a non-standard jack at the device end. Standard USB interface cables such as used by digital cameras and portable hard disk would make sense # obscure software - had trouble installing on Windows XP. # could not find a way to use zune as a USB drive (as against creative's players) # device heavily tied with the software - restricts portability. overall not worth the hassle and price.

STAY AWAY

We can NOT download the software to even get started. The "support" pages are a joke. My son tried and he has a computer science/engineering degree from a Big 10 university. This is the biggest rip-off ever. Hopefully we can return it, but what a terrible disappointment for my 13 year old.

Apple iPod nano 8 GB Black (3rd Generation)

Reviews

Great Music Player

I love this Nano. Updated great Ipod features with Video and and Awesome battery life.

apple ipod 8gb

We are very happy with the i-pod. It is in very good shape and works wonderfully. We are using it for autistic son who loves videos. We were able to transfer a number of his movies onto the i-pod for him to watch while we are out in the community. Easy transaction, and we received it in a timely manner. Thanks!

Great product, but broke in 2 weeks

My daughter loves this green nano, her birthday gift. But it broke in 2 weeks, before her real birthday date. Amazon responded very quickly and sent out another new one for replacement. Thanks a lot.

great

this ipod is great i have yet to have any problems and i am glad i got it

Ipod Nano

I love my Ipod Nano. I loaded all of our music CD's into it and I bought a FM charger transmitter to connect to my car radio and my home stereo system. I bought some music on the web and I am going to check out the library for more music to load into it. It holds 2000 songs. It is amazing that this tiny device holds so much music (and movies/videos too). I sit around Borders and listen to music, drink coffee and read magazines.

Apple iPod classic 80 GB Black (6th Generation)

Reviews

Great product with excellent features.

Apple iPod classic 80 GB Black (6th Generation) Huge storage capacity and upgraded features from my nano. Very happy with this upgraded version.

Apple iPod Classic 80GB is FANTASTIC!!!!

Item was just as described. Super fast shipping, keep up the fast shipping, and you will always have my business!

Excellent product

If you want plenty of space for music, videos, pics and podcasts, but dont need the extras with the ipod touch (higher price, reduced amount of memory) this is a great product. Also nice improvements over 5th generation ipod. I am very satisfied with the 6th generation 80GB ipod classic.

wor can i say

IPOD classic is awesome, i dont think i need to say much more. People tend to be complaining about the click wheel, mine works just fine and i preferred to itouch because of more space. And its as light as the 30 GB one so its pretty neat, kudos to apple

Very pleased overall

My two complaints are that it is slow to respond at times (presumably due to the fact that it must access the hard drive), and that there is no user-customizable EQ setting. Having said that, I've been very happy with my iPod and would recommend it to anyone. It's obviously a very sleek package and has a certain "heft" to it that indicates quality build materials and durability (to me).
